GPL: GFA details why ONLY Benjamin Asare made Black Stars squad for Austria, Germany friendlies

Henry Asante Twum, the Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association, has explained why only one player from the Ghana Premier League made it into the Black Stars squad for the upcoming international friendlies.

Head coach Otto Addo recently unveiled a 26-man squad for the pre-World Cup friendlies against Austria and Germany, with Benjamin Asare standing as the only locally-based player selected.

Addressing concerns on Asempa FM, Asante Twum stressed that the selection was guided strictly by data-driven evaluation and not a disregard for domestic league players.

According to him, the technical team, led by Otto Addo, has been closely monitoring performances in the Ghana Premier League while also analyzing players’ statistics, consistency, and adaptability before making final decisions.

He further noted that missing out on the squad is not limited to local players alone, as several foreign-based players in Europe were also left out, highlighting the competitiveness of the selection process.

Ghana will first face Austria at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna on March 27, before traveling to Stuttgart to take on four-time world champions Germany on March 30.

The Black Stars will continue their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup — to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico — with additional friendly matches lined up against Mexico in May and Wales in early June.
