Joel Agyekum, a Ghanaian native born in Hamburg, has signed his first professional contract with Hamburger SV, completing his journey from academy prospect to first-team professional.
After joining HSV from Eimsbutteler TV in 2017, Agyekum spent almost eight years in the club’s youth ranks before rising to the first squad and establishing himself as a reliable and formidable defensive player.
In a 2-1 away win over Preussen Munster in February 2025, Agyekum made his first appearance in the first team, making him the 520th HSV player overall since the Bundesliga’s inception.
Consistency, perseverance, and exceptional performances for the U17, U19, and U21 teams have been the foundation of his ascent. He has played in 26 of the U21s’ 31 games this season.
“Joel is further proof that we’re on the right path,” said Stefan Kuntz, HSV’s board member for sport.
“He hasn’t just been gifted this opportunity. He’s worked for it and earned it himself through ambition, application, and talent.”
Claus Costa, head of professional football, stated, “Joel is a modern centre-half with exciting potential. His physicality, pace, and attitude are exactly what we are seeking.”
The 20-year-old, who has also represented Germany at junior level, spoke emotionally about his milestone:
“As a born and bred Hamburger, I am very proud and extremely joyful to have sealed my first pro contract with my club. I am very at home at HSV, and I can sense just how much the club values me.”
As a Ghanaian born in Germany, his development is also watched closely by fans of both nations, as his international future is an intriguing prospect.
