Jonas Adjetey replaces Alexander Djiku for AFCON qualifiers

The injured Alexander Djiku has been replaced in Ghana’s team for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers by FC Basel’s Jonas Adjetey Adjei.

Fenerbahce’s league match on Friday left Djiku with a thigh injury, forcing coach Otto Addo to pick a replacement in the starting lineup.

The 20-year-old defender will make his debut with the Black Stars as they get ready for big games against Niger and Angola.

Teshie Football Academy is where Adjetey began his football career. He has made an impression in the Swiss Super League.

After that, he played for Berekum Chelsea and Accra Great Olympics before joining FC Basel.

Adjei has played in each of Basel’s first six Swiss Super League games this season, making consistent appearances.

On Monday, the youthful defender is scheduled to arrive at the Black Stars camp in order to start getting ready for the qualifications.

On September 5, Ghana will play Angola at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. On September 9, Ghana will journey to Berkane, Morocco, to play Niger.

Due to a thigh injury, Alexander Djiku, a defender for Ghana, will not play in the next Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola and Niger.

During his team’s encounter against Alanyaspor, the 30-year-old Fenerbahce player suffered an injury. He hobbled out in the 61st minute.

After more scans, it was discovered that he had a Grade One strain in his right thigh’s quadriceps.

He would need to heal for 10–14 days, which will keep him out of the vital qualifiers. Djiku played a significant role in Otto Addo’s 23-man qualification squad. Given that a standby list is reportedly in place, the coach may take a late look at a replacement in his absence.

Djiku has won 31 caps for the Black Stars since making his debut in October 2020, solidifying his place in the starting lineup for the national team.

Ghana’s preparation for these crucial games is severely hampered by his injury. Ghana’s next games are against Angola on September 5 at Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi and Niger in Morocco five days later.

Alexander Djiku, the Ghanaian defender for Fenerbahce, has praised Jose Mourinho, the team’s new manager, for his tactical nous, saying that the group is putting in a lot of effort to adjust to his new game plan and philosophy.

Since joining the Istanbul-based team in the summer, 29-year-old Djiku has been pleased with Mourinho’s management style. The defender had an incredible rookie campaign, participating in 36 games, scoring three goals, and dishing out two assists.

Jose Mourinho is entering his first Turkish football league with Fenerbahce, adding to his already impressive coaching resume that includes managing teams in Portugal, England, Italy, and Spain.

Ismail Kartal, Fenerbahce’s former manager, was fired after his team lost to rival Galatasaray by a mere three points in the Turkish championship.

Djiku gave a positive statement about the ongoing preseason training to Fenerbahce TV.

“We’re training quite nicely. The friendly match we have scheduled is quickly approaching. We’re picking up the pace and level. There was a strong and caliber squad the previous year. Numerous players are still active this year, Djiku said to Fenerbahce TV.

“We are trying to understand and establish our coach’s game tactics and philosophy. He is truly a great coach and tactician. He has won everything throughout his career and is a football legend. Benefiting from his experience makes us very happy,” he added.
