GFA Start Search for New Black Stars Coach as Kwesi Appiah Emerges as Possible Interim Option

The Ghana Football Association has started the process of finding a new head coach for the Ghana national football team following the recent dismissal of Otto Addo.

The FA is currently evaluating several options as it looks to stabilise the Black Stars ahead of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Kwesi Appiah linked with return

One of the early names being discussed is former Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah, who is currently managing the Sudan national football team.

Appiah has received praise for his work with Sudan in recent months, but any move to bring him back to Ghana could prove complicated due to his existing contract with the team.

However, the opportunity to lead the Black Stars at the World Cup may influence his decision should the FA formally approach him.

Familiar face for Ghana

Kwesi Appiah is no stranger to the Ghana job, having previously managed the national team on two separate occasions.

During his first tenure, he guided Ghana to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Although the Black Stars were eliminated in the group stage, the team delivered some memorable performances, including a dramatic draw against eventual champions Germany national football team.

That result made Appiah the only Ghana coach to avoid defeat against Germany at the World Cup.

His second spell with the national team was less successful, however, and he was eventually relieved of his duties in 2019 after struggling to maintain consistent results.

Internal interim option also considered

While discussions continue, the FA is also exploring the possibility of appointing an interim coach from within the current technical setup.

Desmond Offei is among the names who could temporarily take charge, with support from assistant coaches Alain Ravera, John Paintsil and Kim Lars Bjorkegren.

The Black Stars’ expanded technical team also includes scout Jose Daniel Martínez Alfonso and physiotherapist Carlos Lozano Romero, which could allow the FA to maintain stability while searching for a permanent coach.

World Cup preparations continue

The Ghana FA faces growing pressure to make a quick decision, especially with friendly matches against Mexico national football team and Wales national football team scheduled for May.

These games are expected to serve as crucial preparation for the 2026 World Cup, where Ghana have been drawn in a challenging group alongside Panama national football team, Croatia national football team and England national football team.

The FA is expected to announce further updates on the coaching situation in the coming weeks.

Sudan Coach Kwesi Appiah Targets AFCON Glory Amid National Turmoil

Sudan’s head coach, Kwesi Appiah, has declared his ambition to lead the Falcons of Jediane to victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), hoping that success on the pitch can bring some relief to his war-torn nation.

The team will take on Senegal in the Round of 16 at Tangier Grand Stadium today, with kick-off set for 16:00 GMT.

In a press briefing, Appiah acknowledged the tough road ahead but emphasized that Sudan is determined to make a deep run in the tournament. The Ghanaian coach revealed that his squad is driven by more than just football—they carry the hopes of a country struggling with prolonged conflict.

We want to win the AFCON title to ease the war in Sudan - Kwesi Appiah

“We believe that winning AFCON could help ease the suffering caused by war back home, perhaps even inspire peace. Being away from our families and our homeland is extremely challenging, but we are committed to giving our best on the field to uplift our people,” Appiah said.

Sudan has faced years of civil unrest, which has tragically claimed thousands of lives and forced the national team to host all their AFCON 2025 qualifying matches abroad. Despite these hardships, Appiah and his players remain focused on their mission: to bring pride and hope to the Sudanese people through football.

Kwesi Appiah, the coach of Sudan, has promised that his side will do everything in their power to win the bronze in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Today, August 29, at Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, the Falcons of Jediane take on the Lions of Teranga of Senegal in the third-place playoff.

Appiah emphasized the need of uplifting the Sudanese people during difficult times after their semifinal loss to Madagascar.

“We want to bring smiles to the Sudanese, especially at a time when our country is going through such hardship.

“This game is very important to us, and we will give everything to win the medal.”

As the competition has gone on, the Ghanaian strategist added, the team has become stronger and more unified.

“We are more united now than we were in the first game. We have learned a lot throughout the tournament and believe we can put on a great show,” Appiah noted.

Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00 GMT.

Sudan Coach Kwesi Appiah Eyes Success at CHAN 2024

Under the leadership of Kwesi Appiah, the seasoned Ghanaian coach entrusted with leading the Northeast African nation back to prominence in continental football, Sudan enters the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) with quiet confidence.

The competition, which only includes players selected from domestic leagues, will be the Falcons of Jediane’s third participation.

Kwesi Appiah leads Sudan into CHAN 2024 with optimism

After a 1-1 draw over two legs and a 2-1 aggregate victory over Ethiopia, they defeated Tanzania on penalties to advance to the next round. Appiah, who was hired in September 2023 following the departure of Moroccan coach Badou Zaki, had a successful campaign.

Having captained Ghana at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and other Africa Cup of Nations competitions, Appiah, 64, is well-known in African football circles. He has already led Sudan to the 2024 AFCON since becoming power. His attention is now on CHAN, a tournament in which he is taking part for the first time.

Al-Ghorbal, also known as Mohamed Abdel Rahman, is the striker that leads Sudan’s team. As the third-highest scorer in the nation, the Al-Hilal forward provides a plethora of experience and a proven track record of scoring goals both domestically and internationally.

Sudan’s best CHAN result came in 2011 when they finished third as hosts. Ranked 113th in the world, they hope to mount a serious challenge this year as the tournament unfolds across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. They will face Congo, Nigeria, and defending champions Senegal in the group stage.

For Kwesi Appiah, this tournament offers another chance to shape his legacy within African football.

Kwesi Appiah

Kwesi Appiah will put his professionalism to the test in the next 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against the Black Stars, according to Badreldin Ibrahim, the Legal and Regulatory Officer of the Sudanese Football Federation.

Ghana will play in the qualifications against Sudan, Angola, and Niger in Group F. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Morocco-hosted competition.

Discussions concerning possible conflicts of interest have arisen since Sudan’s national team is now led by former Black Stars player and coach Kwesi Appiah. In addition, he serves as a member of the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council (GFA).

While acknowledging the particular circumstances, Badreldin Ibrahim told Angel TV he was confident in Appiah’s capacity to handle it professionally.

“The conflict is there, but it is a unique and emotionally charged situation for Kwesi Appiah,” Ibrahim said. “Playing against Ghana in the AFCON qualifiers is a test of Coach Kwasi Appiah’s professionalism and his commitment to the Sudanese Football Federation.”

He added, “He has very good experience that he can bring to the table, which can be advantageous for us, but it will be proven when we see the results and performance. But the conflict is there.”

Kwesi Appiah

In order for his team, Sudan, and their opponents, Ghana, to get to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), head coach Kwesi Appiah has stressed the value of meticulous preparation.

Group F for the qualifications, which took place in Johannesburg, South Africa, included Ghana, Sudan, Angola, and Niger. Former Black Stars coach Appiah, who is currently in charge of Sudan, emphasized that in contemporary football, no team should be taken lightly.

“I’ve always said there are no minnows in football now,” Appiah told 3Sports. “It is really important that any team you meet, you prepare very well and make sure you have the right team to try and win the day.”

Determined to guide Sudan to a successful qualifying, Appiah counseled Ghana to go cautiously and with due diligence, even though they would be playing teams that may not have a great footballing tradition. He thinks that in order for both teams to succeed, this strategy is essential.

“Personally, I also think and hope Ghana and Sudan qualify in that group. For now, I think that is what I can say and I wish both teams the best,” he added.

With two sides predicted to advance from each group, Appiah is upbeat about Ghana’s and Sudan’s chances. The former Black Stars coach is well-aware of the difficulties of the competition. He guided Ghana to the 2019 AFCON, where they were defeated by Tunisia in the round of 16.

In the competition, which will take place in Morocco, Sudan hopes to make their tenth AFCON appearance, while Ghana hopes to make their 25th.
