Nyaho Tamakloe Says Otto Addo’s Dismissal Was Long Overdue

Former Ghana Football Association chairman Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has strongly criticised the prolonged stay of Otto Addo as head coach of the Ghana national football team, insisting the decision to sack him should have been taken much earlier.

Addo, who returned to lead the Black Stars in March 2024, was recently relieved of his duties after a disappointing run of results as Ghana prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Poor results triggered the decision

Ghana endured a difficult international window in March, suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat to the Austria national football team in Vienna before losing 2-1 to the Germany national football team in Stuttgart.

The back-to-back losses intensified criticism of the technical team and eventually led to the decision by the FA to part ways with the coach.

Tamakloe questions Addo’s tenure

Speaking during an interview on Kessben FM, Dr Nyaho Tamakloe, who also serves as a board member of Accra Hearts of Oak, expressed disappointment with Addo’s time in charge of the national team.

According to him, the former Borussia Dortmund youth coach failed to meet expectations during his tenure.

Tamakloe argued that the coach’s removal was long overdue and suggested that his time with the Black Stars did not deliver the progress many supporters had hoped for.

Concerns over local player scouting

The veteran football administrator also criticised Addo’s approach to player selection, particularly his limited focus on scouting talent from the Ghana Premier League.

He revealed that he once advised the coach to travel around the country to monitor local players but claimed the suggestion was dismissed.

According to Tamakloe, Addo reportedly responded by asking whether he wanted him to become a “laughingstock,” a remark the former FA chairman said reflects the current struggles of the team.

Attention shifts to new coach

The Ghana FA is now working to appoint a new head coach within the coming weeks as preparations continue for the World Cup.

The Black Stars are expected to regroup for international friendly matches against the Mexico national football team and the Wales national football team before the tournament.

Ghana will compete in Group L at the 2026 World Cup alongside the Panama national football team, England national football team and Croatia national football team when the competition begins on June 11 across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Ghana Football Association has officially relieved Otto Addo of his duties as head coach of the Ghana national football team following the team’s 2-1 loss to Germany national football team in Stuttgart.

The decision was made just hours after the international friendly defeat, bringing an early end to Addo’s second spell with the Black Stars.

Poor international window raises concerns

Ghana endured a disappointing international break in March, suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat against Austria national football team before losing again to Germany.

The back-to-back defeats intensified pressure on the technical team as preparations continue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Following the Germany match, an emergency meeting was held between officials from the GFA, representatives from the Sports Ministry led by Kofi Adams, and the coaching staff to assess the team’s situation.

FA confirms coaching change

In an official statement released Tuesday morning, the football governing body confirmed the decision to part ways with the coach.

“The Ghana Football Association has parted company with the Head Coach of the senior men’s national team, Otto Addo, with immediate effect,” the statement read.

The FA also expressed appreciation for Addo’s work with the national team and wished him success in his future career.

Officials added that plans for the team’s new technical direction will be announced soon.

Mixed results in second spell

Addo returned to manage Ghana in 2024 after the Africa Cup of Nations, but his second tenure produced mixed results.

During this period, Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a major disappointment for the four-time continental champions. However, he later helped the team secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Despite achieving that milestone, concerns remained about the team’s defensive structure and overall performance levels.

Coaching record with the Black Stars

Across his second spell, Addo recorded:

  • 8 wins
  • 5 draws
  • 9 defeats

in a total of 22 matches.

During his first tenure, he guided Ghana to qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar but the Black Stars were eliminated in the group stage after recording one win and two defeats.

World Cup preparations continue

Addo’s exit means he will not lead Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

The Black Stars have been drawn in a difficult group alongside Panama national football team, Croatia national football team and England national football team.

Ghana are also expected to face Mexico national football team and Wales national football team in friendly matches in May as part of their preparations.

With the tournament approaching, the GFA is now under pressure to quickly appoint a new head coach who can stabilise the team and prepare them for the global competition.

Otto Addo Takes Responsibility After Ghana’s Heavy Defeat to Austria in International Friendly

Otto Addo has taken full responsibility after Ghana national football team suffered a humiliating 5–1 defeat to Austria national football team in an international friendly played in Vienna on Friday.

The Black Stars showed promise in the opening half but collapsed after the break, conceding four goals in the second half against a side coached by Ralf Rangnick.

The defeat marks Ghana’s heaviest loss in nearly two decades. The last time the Black Stars conceded five or more goals was in 2007 when they lost to Saudi Arabia national football team.

Speaking after the match, Addo admitted the team made costly mistakes and stressed that everyone involved must accept responsibility for the disappointing performance.

Otto Addo: “We All Have to Take Responsibility”

The Ghana coach insisted that while he accepts responsibility as the head coach, the result was a collective failure involving players and the entire technical staff.

“I take full responsibility when we win and when we lose,” Addo said in an interview with the Ghana FA’s official website.
“But football is a team effort. It’s not only about me. The players, the technical staff, everybody has to take responsibility.”

Addo admitted that the early goals conceded by Ghana were preventable and ultimately shaped the outcome of the match.

“Surely we have to do much better. The first two goals were avoidable and they played a big role in how the game turned out.”

Ghana Missed Key Chances in the First Half

Despite the heavy scoreline, the Black Stars had several opportunities to take the lead earlier in the match.

Addo revealed that Ghana created three or four promising situations but failed to convert them.

“It was a very difficult game for us, but we had some really good situations where we could have scored,” he explained.
“Out of those chances, we should have scored at least one goal.”

The coach also hinted that Ghana might have been denied potential penalties during the game.

“I think one or two decisions could have been penalties, but that’s football,” he added.

One of Austria’s goals also came from a penalty situation involving defender Jonas Adjetey, a moment Addo believed could have been avoided.

Second Half Collapse Proved Costly

While the Black Stars managed to stay competitive during the first half, Addo described the team’s second-half display as disastrous.

“The second half was a really big disaster,” he admitted.

Austria’s high pressing and fresh substitutions further exposed Ghana’s defensive weaknesses, leading to additional goals that sealed the emphatic victory.

Addo said the team must quickly learn from the mistakes and improve their defensive organization, especially during transitions.

Ghana Shift Focus to Germany Friendly

Following the defeat, Ghana will now turn their attention to their next international friendly against Germany national football team.

The match is scheduled to take place in Stuttgart on Monday, March 31.

Despite the heavy loss, Addo remains confident that the Black Stars have the quality to compete with the four-time world champions.

“We have to analyse this game carefully even though we have little time,” he said.
“There were a lot of things wrong today, but I believe the team has the quality to keep up with Germany.”

Addo Urges Team to Stay Positive

The Ghana coach concluded by emphasizing the importance of maintaining the right mindset ahead of the next match.

“My job is to keep the players positive even after a defeat,” Addo said.
“We must learn from our mistakes, trust ourselves, and focus on the next game.”

Ghana will hope to bounce back strongly when they face Germany in Stuttgart as they continue preparations for upcoming international competitions.

Head coach Otto Addo has unveiled the squad for the Ghana national football team ahead of their upcoming international friendly matches against the Austria national football team and the Germany national football team later this month.

The two games form part of Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the technical team aiming to fine-tune the squad ahead of the global tournament.

Most of the players included in the squad featured during the World Cup qualification campaign. However, the Black Stars coach has also handed debut call-ups to four new players: Derrick Luckassen, Patrick Pfeiffer, Marvin Senaya, and Daniel Agyei.

Ghana will first take on Austria in Vienna on March 27 before travelling to Stuttgart for a high-profile clash against Germany on March 30, 2026.

The friendlies are expected to give Coach Otto Addo the opportunity to assess new talents while strengthening team chemistry ahead of crucial international competitions.

Otto Addo, the head coach of the Ghana Black Stars, said that his team’s 1-0 loss to South Korea ended their Asia tour disappointingly because they were unable to execute a successful high press.

The result came after a setback to Japan during the international window in November.

Addo identified the Black Stars’ tactical difficulties in pressuring South Korea high up the field and their inefficiency in front of goal during a post-match press conference.

Our high press did not work against South Korea - Ghana coach Otto Addo

“Except the Brazil game (where South Korea lost 5-0), I think they don’t concede so many goals anymore, and they are very compact,” he said.

“You can see the change since the last time we met [them in the 2022 World Cup]. I think the main tactical element is that they play with three at the back, always try to overload one side, which makes it sometimes difficult to press if you don’t have the right timing to take the right positions.

“We had problems sometimes, especially in the first half, when to press, who should press, but it’s not too easy for the guys because they haven’t played together for a long time. The timing was not there, and that’s why, especially in the first half, South Korea had more ball possessions and created more chances,” he added.

The Black Stars are set to regroup in March next year as they resume preparations for the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Otto Addo joins Elite Class of World Cup players to also coach their national teams twice

Otto Addo coaches their national teams twice in addition to being a member of the Elite Class of World Cup players.

Otto Addo, the head coach of Ghana, has joined a unique and prestigious group of people in the history of football who have both participated in the FIFA history Cup and led their national teams in two of its competitions.

Addo has accomplished a really historic milestone by being the first African to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as Ghana’s qualifying has already been verified.

At the 2006 World Cup in Germany, when the Black Stars created history by making it to the Round of 16 in their first season, the former Borussia Dortmund winger played for Ghana.

In Qatar 2022, sixteen years later, Addo made his World Cup coaching debut, leading Ghana through a difficult group that included Uruguay, Portugal, and South Korea.

As he gets ready to captain the Black Stars at the 2026 World Cup once more, Addo is joining a select group of football legends who have participated in the competition as coaches, players, and, most famously, managers.

Global icons like Mario Zagallo (Brazil), Franz Beckenbauer (Germany), Didier Deschamps (France), Carlos Bilardo (Argentina), Rudi Voller (Germany), and Jurgen Klinsmann (Germany) are on that illustrious list.

As the first African and the first non-European or South American to accomplish this remarkable feat, Addo’s name now sits proudly among them.

The tale of Addo’s trip is one of tenacity, wit, and patriotism. In 2022, amid a period of transition for Ghanaian football, he was appointed head coach after working as a scout and assistant for the national team.

The former assistant manager of Dortmund was reappointed as head coach of the Black Stars in March 2024 after leaving his job during the World Cup in Qatar.

Addo’s accomplishment holds great significance as Ghana prepares for the expanded 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

It represents the rise of African coaches on the global stage – and proves that homegrown managers can succeed at the highest level with vision, strategy, and leadership.

Otto Addo’s milestone is not just a personal triumph; it is a powerful statement for Ghana and African football.

From wearing the national jersey in 2006 to leading the team to back-to-back World Cup appearances, he has cemented his place as one of the most influential figures in Ghana’s football history – a true bridge between generations and a proud symbol of African excellence on the world stage.

A revision of Otto Addo’s contract as Black Stars coach is hinted to by Sports Minister Kofi Adams.

According to Kofi Adams, Minister of Sports and Recreation, a number of variables would be taken into account while deciding Otto Addo’s future as head coach of the Black Stars.

The 49-year-old tactician recently led the four-time African champions to their fifth FIFA World Cup following a resounding 1–0 victory over Comoros in Accra. However, he was unable to qualify Ghana for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Sports Minister Kofi Adams hints at review of Otto Addo’s contract as Black Stars coach

Even though the team qualified, Addo’s future is still up in the air due to continuous criticism of their patchy performances.

Mr. Adams stressed in an interview on Asempa FM that key football stakeholders will collaborate to decide Addo’s destiny, not simply his ministry.

“If you listen to Otto Addo on the team, he said he will try a lot of legs to know who will go or not, but I believe the management and everybody who is involved in hiring the coach will consider a lot of factors,” Adams remarked.

“I don’t make the decision alone, but I do pay him. The GFA has a role to play, whether or not it is related to this, and we will keep having these conversations.

Mr. Adams, who is also the Buem Constituency’s Member of Parliament, encouraged Ghanaians to support Addo, citing Ivory Coast’s victory in the AFCON earlier this year as motivation.

“Ivory Coast won the AFCON when their assistant coach, Emerse Faé, replaced their fired coach during the tournament. You will succeed if you are resolute. He is currently our coach, and we must help him.”

After leading the Black Stars to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Otto Addo became the first coach to lead Ghana to back-to-back World Cup competitions.

As the first Black Stars coach to get Ghana into two consecutive World Cups, Otto Addo creates history.

Otto Addo, the Black Stars’ head coach, has made a lasting impression on Ghanaian football history by leading his team to a second straight FIFA World Cup qualifying.

Otto Addo makes history as first Black Stars coach to qualify Ghana for two successive World Cups

On Sunday, October 12, Ghana defeated Comoros 1-0 in their final Group I qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium, securing their spot in the 2026 World Cup.

In addition to being the driving force for Ghana’s return to the international scene at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after the side missed out on the 2018 tournament in Russia, the achievement makes Otto Addo the first coach to guide Ghana to back-to-back World Cup qualifying.

Ghana has qualified for the largest football competition for the fifth time.

The only African countries with more appearances on the international scene are Cameroon (8), Morocco (7), Tunisia (7), and Nigeria (6).

Ghana will now focus on getting ready for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the US, Canada, and Mexico will co-host under Otto Addo’s leadership.

Mohammed Kudus’ performance has excited Black Stars coach Otto Addo ahead of Ghana’s last set of World Cup qualifying matches.

In the final two games, the Black Stars will play Comoros Island and the Central African Republic, with a spot in the North American tournament on the line.

Since joining Tottenham Hotspur during the summer transfer window, Kudus has been in incredible form. He signed with Spurs just before the international break.

Ghanaian coach Otto Addo is thrilled with Mohammed Kudus' performance ahead of CAR match

The 25-year-old increased his goal total in the English Premier League to five in seven games by scoring and providing an assist in the 2-1 victory over Leeds United at Elland Road.

“I’m obviously thrilled for everyone who scores if someone does. However, he performed admirably. He gave Tottenham numerous opportunities. During Ghana’s pregame press conference versus CAR, Addo stated, “He had some assists as well.”

If Kudus and his teammates defeat the Central African Republic on Wednesday, they should guarantee a spot at the World Cup next summer.

On Sunday, October 8, the Black Stars will play Comoros Island at home to complete their qualifying.

This week, Black Stars coach Otto Addo will reveal his team for Ghana’s pivotal matches in the last round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying tournament.

Four-time African champions Ghana are now leading Group I with 19 points and only need to win one more game to guarantee their spot in the championship in the US, Canada, and Mexico the following year.

Otto Addo expected to announce Black Stars squad this week for the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers game

The Black Stars will play their last doubleheader on Wednesday, October 8, at the Al Abdi Stadium in El Jadida against the Central African Republic. On Sunday, October 12, they will return to Accra to play Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium.

It is anticipated that Otto Addo and his technical staff will put together a formidable team that can guarantee qualifying; training will start in Accra prior to the team’s departure for Morocco.

The Black Stars are keen to make amends for losing out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations by securing a spot at the international event and winning back the trust of Ghanaian fans.
