Even though the game was entertaining, Chelsea, the winners of the Club World Cup, couldn’t have been more American if they tried.
Michael Buffer prior to the game, a halftime performance, and, finally, Donald Trump (who received jeers when he took the field) hoisting the trophy among the players.

It brought to mind Super Bowls, where the owners of the teams get to raise the Club World Cup trophy in front of the players who have devoted their life to it. Unfortunately, politics enjoys exploiting sport for its own purposes, and witnessing Trump and the hideous Gianni Infantino capitalize on the players’ success served as a terrible reminder of that.

It looks like Trump was supposed to hand over the medals and the trophy and then retire – but he stuck around and will now be immortalised in the memories of this glorious moment. And to think John Terry was getting stick in 2012!
Chelsea players pick up awards after trophy win
There was much to enjoy from the ceremony aside from one regrettable moment. Cole Palmer received his best player award, Robert Sanchez received his golden glove for best goalie after overcoming some serious criticism, and numerous other team members contributed to this incredible and rather surprising victory.

Blues group finally get hugely deserved rest
Now, finally, almost a full year after starting their European campaign against Servette, this group get a break. We hope they enjoy it – the Premier League is back in a month’s time, and this season is going to be just as long and intense as the last one.
Oh and it has a World Cup at the end of it – so this likely isn’t the last we will see of Trump with a big FIFA trophy anytime soon.
