Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has made an emotional appeal to Ghanaians around the world, calling for unity and unwavering support as the national team prepares to begin its 2026 FIFA World Cup journey against Panama.
The Ghana football legend, who remains the country’s all-time leading scorer and one of Africa’s most celebrated World Cup stars, delivered a heartfelt message titled “My People” ahead of the Black Stars’ opening Group L fixture in Toronto.
Gyan congratulated the 26 players selected by head coach Carlos Queiroz for the tournament and expressed confidence in their ability to represent Ghana with pride on football’s biggest stage.
Rallying a Nation Behind the Black Stars
In his message, the former Sunderland striker urged Ghanaians to put aside differences and unite behind the team, emphasizing that football remains one of the strongest symbols of national identity and togetherness.
According to Gyan, the World Cup offers a unique opportunity for Ghanaians across the globe to come together in support of a common cause as the Black Stars seek to make the nation proud.
The former captain stressed that regardless of opinions surrounding squad selection, tactics, or expectations, the players need the full backing of the nation as they prepare to face some of the world’s top teams.
With Ghana returning for a fifth World Cup appearance, Gyan believes collective support from fans could play a crucial role in motivating the players throughout the competition.
Recognition for Key Stakeholders
The three-time World Cup participant also acknowledged the efforts of several individuals and institutions who have contributed to Ghana’s journey to the tournament.
He praised President John Dramani Mahama, Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams, the Ghana Football Association led by Kurt Okraku, members of the technical team, the media, and supporters for their various contributions toward the Black Stars’ preparations.
Gyan described the team’s participation as a national mission that extends beyond football, highlighting the importance of unity in helping Ghana project a positive image on the international stage.
Ghana Ready for Panama Challenge
The Black Stars will kick off their Group L campaign against Panama on Wednesday, June 17, at BMO Field in Toronto, Canada.
The fixture is expected to attract significant attention as Ghana seek a winning start before facing tougher tests against England and Croatia later in the group stage.
Carlos Queiroz’s men have already settled in Canada and completed the necessary preparations ahead of the crucial encounter.
After Panama, Ghana will take on England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 before concluding their group-stage campaign against Croatia on June 27.
Eyes on a Return to the Knockout Stage
The Black Stars are aiming to reach the knockout phase of the FIFA World Cup for the first time since their memorable run to the quarter-finals in South Africa in 2010.
Having suffered group-stage eliminations in both the 2014 and 2022 editions, expectations remain high among supporters eager to see Ghana re-establish itself among the tournament’s surprise packages.
For Asamoah Gyan, however, the immediate focus is clear: unity, belief, and support.
As Ghana prepare to step onto the world stage once again, the former captain’s message serves as a reminder that regardless of the result, the Black Stars carry the hopes of an entire nation.
With the countdown to kick-off almost over, Ghanaians everywhere will be hoping the team can reward that support with a positive start against Panama and launch a memorable World Cup campaign.
