Cape Verde’s historic first appearance at the FIFA World Cup ended in heartbreaking fashion after the Blue Sharks suffered a dramatic 3-2 extra-time defeat to Argentina in the Round of 32 on Friday.

Despite facing the reigning world champions, Cape Verde produced another fearless display, taking the game the distance and earning widespread praise for their resilience and determination.

Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha was once again one of the standout performers, producing a string of outstanding saves to frustrate Argentina and keep his side in contention for much of the contest.

Argentina broke the deadlock in the 29th minute when Lionel Messi finished brilliantly into the roof of the net after latching onto an exquisite lofted pass from Lisandro Martínez.

Cape Verde, however, refused to be intimidated. Earlier in the match, Vozinha had denied Messi from a dangerous free-kick before making another excellent stop on the stroke of half-time to keep out Enzo Fernández’s low strike.

The African nation gradually settled into the game and found a deserved equaliser in the 59th minute. Ryan Mendes squared the ball to Deroy Duarte, who calmly picked his spot and fired into the bottom corner to bring the scores level.

Duarte had already tested Emiliano Martínez shortly after the restart, forcing the Argentine goalkeeper into a smart save from a powerful effort outside the penalty area.

Argentina continued to dominate possession, but Cape Verde’s defence, inspired by Vozinha, held firm. The experienced goalkeeper denied Messi on several occasions, including a close-range opportunity midway through the second half, another free-kick, and a stoppage-time effort that looked destined for the back of the net.

Extra time delivered even more drama. Lisandro Martínez restored Argentina’s lead in the 92nd minute, reacting quickest inside the six-yard box after Alexis Mac Allister nodded the ball back across goal following a corner.

Cape Verde responded once again in spectacular fashion. In the 103rd minute, Sidny Lopes Cabral unleashed a thunderous long-range strike into the top corner to level the match at 2-2 and ignite hopes of a famous upset.

Messi continued to orchestrate Argentina’s attacks and was denied again by Vozinha early in the second period of extra time after breaking through on goal.

With penalties looming, Argentina finally found the decisive moment in the 111th minute. Messi delivered a pinpoint corner that was met by Cristian Romero, whose powerful header beat Vozinha and secured a thrilling 3-2 victory for the South Americans.

Although Cape Verde’s dream World Cup run came to an end, the tournament debutants leave the competition with their heads held high after a series of spirited performances that announced their arrival on football’s biggest stage.
