Ghana’s Black Satellites Ready to Battle Ivory Coast in WAFU U20 Semi-Final Showdown

On Sunday night, Black Satellites will play Ivory Coast in the 2025 WAFU Zone B U20 Boys Cup semifinals. The Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram will host the match at 19:00 GMT.

After dominating the group round, Ivory Coast enters the match in excellent shape. The Young Elephants finished with nine points and a perfect record after winning all three of their Group B games, including a 2-0 victory over Togo.

Ghana had a more complicated path to the final four. The Black Satellites drew 1-1 with Nigeria to start the season, and then narrowly defeated Benin 1-0.

They finished second in Group A with four points, tied with Nigeria but edged out on goal difference.

With a spot in the final on the line, Sunday’s encounter promises intensity and drama. Backed by home support, Ghana will be determined to upset the Ivorians’ momentum. Ivory Coast, meanwhile, will aim to continue their unbeaten streak.

Nigeria will face Niger at 15:00 GMT in the other semi-final earlier that day.

Black Satellites coach opens up on preparations ahead of 2025 U-20 AFCON tournament

Ghana’s Black Satellites’ head coach, Desmond Ofei, has provided insight into the team’s preparations for the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, which will take place in Egypt.

The Black Satellites, who won four AFCON championships and one FIFA World Cup triumph in 2009, bring a significant legacy and high expectations to the North African nation.

Accompanying Senegal, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Central African Republic in a challenging Group C, Ghana will be put to the test right away.

Giving update about his outfit preparations for the tournament, Ofei said, “We started with a local talent identification programme that ran for about five weeks. We looked at a wide pool of players from domestic competitions. Then we went to Morocco for a three-nation tournament which gave us a clearer picture of our core squad. The next phase is all about tactical fine-tuning and strengthening team chemistry”

The top two teams from each group, plus the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the quarter-finals.

The tournament is set to kick off on Sunday, April 27, 2025, and will conclude with the final on May 18, 2025.

The stakes are high. Not only is continental supremacy on the line, but the top four finishers will secure their ticket to the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile — a stage where Ghana has previously etched its name in history as the only African team to lift the trophy.

Black Satellites

In good health, the Ghanaian Black Satellites have touched down in France to begin a three-week European tour.

The goal of the visit, according to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), is to assist the country’s male U20 team in getting ready for the WAFU B U20 competition in 2024.

Desmond Ofei, the Black Satellites’ coach, traveled with a 22-person team for the tour.

The team is expected to play a number of friendly matches after arriving in France on Thursday.

“The Black Satellites will play in a series of friendly matches in France and also in Belgium.
“The team will battle Belgian outfit KV Mechelen on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at the K. Rumstse SK, Doelhaagstraat, 70, Tourcoing, Nord before facing Royal Antwerp U23 side on Sunday, July 19, 2024, at the Oude Bosuilbaan 54a, 2100, Antwerp,” parts of a statement from the Ghana FA said on Friday.

The Black Satellites will train regularly at Rue de l’Union à 70, Tourcoing, Stadium, Nord while they are in France. Coach Desmond Ofei will use the three-week training period to refine the team’s rough edges in order to compete in the WAFU B U20 championship in 2024.
