Moroccan FA to petition CAF for postponement of 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations

According to Africasoccer.com, the Moroccan Football Federation is requesting that the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations be postponed due to numerous obligations.

From March 17 to April 3, 2026, the North African nation will host the CAF’s premier women’s competition. Sixteen nations will compete for the coveted trophy.

With the host country scheduled to make a formal appeal to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on a number of urgent problems, the tournament might potentially be postponed.

Due to numerous obligations, including the requirement to complete the Moroccan league by May 15, 2026, in time for the 2026 World Cup, the Moroccan FA decided to request a postponement of the tournament.

In addition, the Moroccan football governing body intends to concentrate on the Atlas Lions’ preparations for the international tournament that will take place in Mexico, Canada, and the United States.

After failing to achieve automatic qualification, Egypt, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, and Mali were invited to participate in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament, which will include 16 teams for the first time.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria are the record holders of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, winning the title ten times. They won the previous edition and will be hoping to defend the title in the North African country.

Following years of financial deficits, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a net profit of $9.48 million for the 2023–2024 fiscal year, marking a significant turnaround.

Stricter financial management procedures, new sponsorship deals, and higher commercial revenue are the causes of the improvement.

In order to strengthen African football, CAF made significant investments, according to its financial report. These included $35 million for football development projects throughout the continent, $19 million for tournament organization, and $81 million in prize money for competitions.

Dr. Patrice Motsepe, the president of CAF, voiced optimism about the organization’s financial future and disclosed that talks are advanced on a $1 billion long-term marketing and television arrangement.

He pointed out that CAF’s increasing financial stability will support continued initiatives to improve competition quality, support member associations, and build football infrastructure.

The most recent statistics demonstrate a restored sense of trust in CAF’s leadership and business strategy, laying a solid basis for the sport’s future expansion in Africa.

During a virtual meeting on Friday, June 21, 2024, the CAF Executive Committee decided on the dates for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be held in Morocco.

The final match of the tournament is set for Sunday, January 18, 2026, with the competition starting on Sunday, December 21, 2025.

Dr. Patrice Motsepe, the president of CAF, voiced confidence in the competition’s success during the meeting, predicting that AFCON Morocco 2025 will be the most memorable in the competition’s history.

After lengthy deliberations with multiple stakeholders, the decision was taken while taking into account the schedules of both home and foreign matches.

In addition, Dr. Motsepe highlighted the notable expansion of women’s football in Africa and expressed confidence in the triumphant hosting of the Women’s AFCON Morocco 2024.

Building solid relationships with other football associations, upholding and advancing the interests of African players, and taking African football to a worldwide platform are all priorities for CAF.

Dr. Motsepe expressed gratitude to the Moroccan government, the people of Morocco, King Mohamed VI of Morocco, the Federation Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF), its President Fouzi Lekjaa, and the Moroccan people for hosting the AFCON Morocco 2025.
