2025 AFCON Qualifiers: Nathaniel Adjei earns Black Stars call up

Ghana has selected FC Lorient defender Nathaniel Adjei for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Since joining the Orange boys from Swedish team Hammarby in January, Nathaniel Adjei has been spectacular. The Brittany-based guardsman was signed for €7.5 million, and it has been a wise move from the beginning.

The 22-year-old was called up for the Black Stars in anticipation of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola and Niger in recognition of his outstanding achievements for FC Lorient.

Adjei received a call-up to the Ghanaian squad for their two March friendlies against Uganda and Nigeria. But after receiving an ankle knock, he was forced to leave the squad.

Adjei is currently making the significant transition into the senior squad after previously playing for every junior national team.

Now, while he is in camp with the team, the adaptable defender will try to win over Otto Addo.

After visiting Luanda to play the Palancas Negras on November 15, Ghana will meet Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium on November 18, 2024.

However, the Black Stars’ dismal performance in the qualifying stage puts them in danger of missing out on the AFCON for the first time in 20 years.

After four games, Ghana has a dismal AFCON qualifying season with two losses and two draws. They have only managed two points, which puts them in third place going into the last round of games this month.

To keep their prospects of qualifying for the tournament in Morocco next year, the Black Stars now need to overcome Angola and Niger, who have already qualified, and pray that Sudan falls to these same opponents.

FC Lorient has exercised their buy option on the Ghanaian defender, Nathaniel Adjei, making him the most expensive player in the history of the Swedish Allsvenskan.

During the January transfer window, Adjei came to the Orange lads on a loan from Hammarby IF of the Swedish Allsvenskan.

The contract featured a buyout requirement in the event that FC Lorient continued to play at the highest level.

Due to the financial commitment, FC Lorient was allegedly considering giving up its option to sign the 21-year-old defender after being demoted to Ligue 2.

The club from Brittany exercised their purchase option on Thursday; it was scheduled to expire on June 15, 2024.

With a further €2 million in bonuses, the option is valued at about €5.1 million, making the deal’s overall package at €7.1 million.

Thus, Adjei becomes the most costly defender in Allsvenskan history.

He won over the supporters of Stade du Moustoir with his exceptional performances ever since he joined the team.

Adjei, who played for the team for 15 games, only missed the last day of play because of an injury.

The dynamic guardsman was sidelined for Ghana’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic due to the injury.

Laurent Koscielny, a former captain of Arsenal, has been named Sporting Director of the team.

The 38-year-old, who retired from professional play in 2022, spent the previous season coaching the team’s under-17 squad before taking on the role.
