In his reflections on Athletic Bilbao’s Copa del Rey elimination, Ghanaian international Iñaki Williams acknowledged that the atmosphere in the dressing room was like a funeral after their semifinal loss to fierce Basque rivals Real Sociedad.

In the Basque derby’s second leg, which took place at the Estadio Municipal de Anoeta on Wednesday night, the Black Stars forward started and gave it his all as Athletic Bilbao lost by a slim margin.

Williams’ team was already behind after losing the first leg at San Mamēs Stadium last week before the pivotal match. As a result, Real Sociedad advanced to the championship final with a 2-0 aggregate victory.

Speaking after the match, Williams could not hide his disappointment, expressing the emotional toll the defeat had taken on the squad. “The dressing room feels like a funeral; we are hurting. It hurts because they are our eternal rivals and because we were not at our usual level.”

Williams, who is the captain of Athletic Bilbao admitted the team’s performance fell short of expectations and acknowledged the pain of missing out on a place in the final.

Williams also described the current campaign as a difficult one for the club, citing inconsistent performances that have made the season more challenging than anticipated.

“The season is proving how difficult it is for us, and our fans deserved a little joy,” he added.

Meanwhile, Real Sociedad will face Atletico Madrid in the final of the Copa del Rey, scheduled for April 18, 2026.

Inaki Williams and Nico Williams, two Spanish-Ghanaian football players, have jointly refuted claims of auto fraud in Spain.

According to earlier reports, Inaki and Nico Williams brothers, who are listed on Athletic Bilbao’s books, are accused of defrauding the company out of €80,000 for a Mercedes AMG E63.

An automobile dealer in Spain had accused the two of engaging in a fraudulent transaction by not paying for the car fully.

Despite admitting the existence of the accusations, the pair quickly denied any misconduct in a statement.

“After learning from the media about a potential complaint against us and gathering information, we can confirm that a complaint has been filed based on facts that do not correspond to reality. We categorically deny committing any crime. There are no factual or legal grounds for any accusation of criminal behavior,” the brothers said in a joint statement.

Inaki and Nico dispute the accusations, but they say the current events are an attempt to harm their name. The two have stated that they are willing to work with law police and plan to demonstrate their innocence while taking action against the people who made the unfounded charges.

Prior to the 2022 World Cup competition, Inaki Williams, who was named captain of Athletic Bilbao, played for the Spanish national team before switching allegiance to represent Ghana.

Nico Williams, on the other hand, has chosen to play for Spain and was a key part of the team’s victory in the 2024 European Championship.

The duo are expected to play a huge role for Athletic Bilbao in the upcoming 2025/26 football campaign. The Spanish outfit will be competing in three major competitions next season following their qualification back to Europe after long-term absence.

Athletic Club will open their La Liga season with a home game against Sevilla as Nico and Inaki aim to impress.
