Ajibade and Alozie fire Nigeria into WAFCON final

Nigeria advanced to the final and maintained hopes of a record-breaking 10th continental title on Tuesday night by defeating arch-rivals South Africa 2-1 in a thrilling Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semi-final.

In what was billed as a “final before the final,” Michelle Alozie and Rasheedat Ajibade came through when it counted most, scoring either side of a penalty kick from Linda Motlhalo to help the Super Falcons exact revenge for their 2022 defeat to Banyana Banyana and demonstrate their supremacy on African soil.

Nigeria March into WAFCON Final with Ajibade and Alozie on Target

Following a handball by Bambanani Mbane in the South African box, Ajibade broke the tie just before halftime with a calm finish from the penalty spot. Nigeria controlled the pace with a well-organized defense and deft transitions, with Alozie and Ihezuo probing all the time, and the goal capped their first-half dominance.

The defending champions, South Africa, put up a strong fight in the second half and were rewarded in the 60th minute when Osinachi Ohale brought down Hildah Magaia, resulting in a penalty. Motlhalo scored with a flawless penalty kick to tie the score and give Banyana a brief advantage. However, Michelle Alozie scored an incredible long-range winner deep into stoppage time as extra time approached.

Her 35-yard effort swerved past goalkeeper Andile Dlamini and sparked wild celebrations among the Nigerian players and fans inside Stade Larbi Zaouli. The final minutes saw tempers flare and injuries mount, with Chinwendu Ihezuo stretchered off and yellow cards flying.

But Nigeria held firm through nine minutes of stoppage time to seal the win and set up a mouthwatering final in Rabat. The Super Falcons remain unbeaten in the tournament and will head into the final with renewed confidence. For South Africa, their title defense ends in heartbreak, but they will regroup for the third-place playoff.

Due to persistent rumors regarding his future with Newcastle United, Alexander Isak is not part of the team for the preseason tour of Asia.

Isak will miss the tour due to a minor thigh injury, according to Newcastle. Earlier this week, ESPN confirmed getting information that Al Hilal had looked into a deal for Isak. Isak’s transfer to Liverpool has also been mentioned.

Howe said he could not promise he would still be at Newcastle at the end of the transfer window, which is why he was left out of Saturday’s friendly against Celtic.

Isak

“I think it’s difficult for me to give 100% clarity on any player,” Howe said. “I’d never sit here and do that because it’s football and you never know what can happen.

“But Alex is happy at Newcastle. He loves the players he plays with, the staff, the team and I’ve never had any issue with him.”

His readiness to adapt and integrate into the team’s philosophy will be a valuable asset, especially for a side looking to bounce back into the top flight.

He added, “I’m looking forward to meeting all the players and hopefully we can create something special this year.” Schlupp’s positive outlook, combined with his versatility, will not only strengthen the squad on the pitch but also inspire younger players within the dressing room.

Since then, Kotoko’s contingent has arrived to the Protea Hotel Fire and Ice, where they will recuperate from the journey.

Black Queens Coach Reacts to Semifinal Defeat

Despite not making it to the final, Black Queens coach Kim Lars Björkegren thinks his team beat Morocco in their WAFCON 2025 semifinal match.

Ghana lost against the host country on penalties, narrowly missing out on the final.

Black Queens Coach

Björkegren lamented the lost chance while expressing pride in his team’s performance during the press conference held after the game.

“I think we were the better team if you look at stats from the game,” he said.

While Ghana’s campaign ends in disappointment, their display against a strong Moroccan side earned praise for tactical discipline and resilience.

Ghana took a first half lead through Stella Nyamekye but the Moroccans found an equalizer in the second as the game travelled all the way into penalty shootout.

The Black Queens missed two out of their four penalties while Morocco scored all four to progress into the final.

Black Queens Bow Out After Heartbreaking Penalty Shootout Defeat to Morocco

Ghana lost 4-2 to Morocco, missing out on a position in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations finals as Evelyn Badu and Comfort Yeboah missed their penalty kicks.

After Sakina Ouzraoui scored 10 minutes inside the second half to negate Stella Nyamekye’s 26th-minute goal, regulation time plus an additional 30 minutes finished in a draw.

Black Queens eliminated after penalty loss to Morocco

The starting lineup that defeated Algeria on penalties to guarantee a spot in the semifinals was kept by Kim Lars Bjorkegren.

The Black Queens made an excellent start to the game, giving away very little in terms of possession, despite the hostile environment.

Ghana also created a few chances of their own with Stella Nyamekye and Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah forcing decent saves out of Morocco goalkeeper, Khadija Er-Rmichi.

She made a superb stop on Josephine Bonsu’s header, but was unable to block Stella Nyamekye’s rebound attempt, which gave the Black Queens the game’s lead.

Princess Marfo and Doris Boaduwaa had opportunities to give Ghana more goals before halftime, but they fumbled their lines at the last second. A last-ditch clearing by defensive stalwart Susan Ama Duah stopped a Moroccan goal.

Stella’s goal was the difference maker as the two teams entered the half. After the Atlas Lionesses goalie made a mistake, it might have been a fantastic start to the second half, but Stella was unable to score with a sneaky loop.

Cynthia Konlan was forced into her first save of the game when she tipped Najat Badri’s curler over the crossbar.

Just when the game seemed to be taking off again, the Black Queens conceded after Sakina Ouzraoui’s beat Cynthia to the ball to make it 1-1.

Despite the Moroccan pressure after the equaliser, the Ghanaian team was up to task forcing the game into extra time for the second consecutive game.

It was a cagey affair as both sides failed to get the much needed goal as the match ended in penalties.

Hosts Morocco netted all their spot kicks as Evelyn and Comfort missed theirs and as a result, Ghana was unable to make it to the final for the first time since 2006.

Abdul Aziz Issah, a forward from Ghana, has returned to Barcelona Atletico on a new loan agreement that will keep him there until June 2026.

Despite a strong start, the 19-year-old only made two appearances during his first season on loan at the Spanish team from Dreams FC in 2024–2025.

Abdul Aziz Issah’s return to Ghana was made possible by Barcelona’s initial refusal to exercise the purchase option in his contract. But new negotiations have led to a new deal that allows the adolescent to go back to Catalonia.

Abdul Aziz Issah

Issah gained notoriety following an outstanding 2023–24 CAF Confederation Cup season with Dreams FC, in which he scored four goals and contributed two assists in ten games.

His long-range strike against Lobito was nominated for CAF Goal of the Year.

Despite limited minutes in Spain, Issah’s form with Ghana’s U20s and a senior debut at the Unity Cup in May 2025 kept him in the spotlight. He scored Ghana’s opener in their U20 AFCON quarterfinal against Egypt and earned a Man of the Match award earlier in the tournament.

Barcelona Atletic will be hoping the second spell provides better opportunities for the promising Ghanaian forward.
