Black Meteors

After the Black Meteors were eliminated from the 2023 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations after a dismal 1-1 draw against Guinea on Friday night, Ghana was unable to qualify for the Paris Olympic Games.

Despite requiring a victory to move on to the next round of the competition and maintain their chances of qualifying for the Olympics, Ghana gave up their advantage in the first half, which led to an early exit.

The following five talking topics from Black Meteors’ failed campaign are highlighted:

Defensive Struggles:

While the attacking prowess showed promise with five goals scored in three games, the defensive performance was abysmal. Conceding a total of eight goals in just 270 minutes of play is simply unacceptable, leading to their premature exit. Notably, goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim, who was part of Ghana’s 2022 World Cup squad, failed to organise the defence effectively, resulting in conceding avoidable goals. The defensive unit as a whole must bear the majority of the responsibility, with centre-back Terry Yegbe also performing poorly throughout the tournament.

Ibrahim Tanko’s Continued Failure:

Black Meteors coach Ibrahim Tanko has once again fallen short of delivering the desired results. Four years ago in Egypt, Tanko missed out on Olympic qualification, and unfortunately, history has repeated itself. Despite the high hopes placed in him due to his previous tournament experience, where he guided the team to a fourth-place finish, this time he couldn’t even secure advancement from the group stage. It is clear that a change of direction and a new coaching approach are necessary at this point.

Ghana Outplayed:

Throughout the tournament, Ghana failed to display high-level football in any of their matches. They were consistently outclassed, even in the game they won 3-2 against Congo, where Congo could have equalised given more time. Their 5-1 thrashing by Morocco showcased their shortcomings, and in the match against Guinea, they struggled to maintain possession as the Guineans dictated the game brilliantly. This is a disappointing sight for Ghana, a nation considered a football powerhouse on the continent.

Prolonged Wait for Olympic Qualification:

The Black Meteors’ failure to qualify for the Olympic Games adds to the disappointment of Ghanaian football fans who had high hopes for this team to end the long wait for Olympic participation. Qualifying for the Olympics used to be routine for Ghana, with the country even securing a historic bronze medal at the 1992 Barcelona Games. However, recent years have seen struggles to qualify, with the last appearance being in 2004. The objective of ending the wait was clear going into this tournament, but the players and coaching staff fell short, leaving Ghanaian football fans disheartened.

Woeful Tournament Results Continue:

Ghana’s tournament performances over the past 16 months have been extremely poor. The U-17 and U-20 teams failed to impress in the WAFU Zone B tournaments and missed out on qualification for the AFCON tournaments. The senior national team, the Black Stars, finished last in their group at the Cameroon tournament, managing only one point. They also suffered an early exit at the World Cup in Qatar. Additionally, the Black Galaxies were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the African Nations tournament by Niger. These repeated failures indicate underlying issues within Ghanaian football, and urgent action is required from the authorities to address and rectify the situation.

Black Meteors

Asamoah Gyan blasts the Black Meteors over their attitude toward the team

Asamoah Gyan, a striker from Ghana who just announced his retirement, has attacked the Black Meteors following their humiliating exit from the CAF U23 Nations Cup in Morocco on June 30, 2023.

The playing group, which had some bright players like Fatawu Ishahaku and Nordsjaelland golden kid Ernest Nuamah, was further torn apart by the nation’s all-time leading scorer.

In their last Group encounter, the Black Meteors drew 1-1 with Guinea and were eliminated from the competition with four points.

”What I saw in this Black meteors team is some players think they are bigger than the whole team. Small hype and fame ? SHM,” the former Sunderland and Al Ain star man posted on his Twitter page.

He added: ”Modern football is not about only what you do with the ball. It’s about what you do without the ball. I see players thinking the can play alone. It’s about time we wake up and defend when we lose the ball. SMH.”

Saddick Adams

Saddick Adams retires from football

Ghanaian football fans, especially Kotoko supporters, will remember Saddick Adams for his consistent performance on the field. Sadick Adams, a former attacker for Atletico de Madrid, has posted a statement on social media announcing his retirement.

At the age of 33, the Ghanaian striker retired from professional football. Saddick’s most recent team, Arambagh KS of the Bangladesh Premier League, used him as a striker. In November 2007, World Soccer magazine named Adams as one of the 50 Most Exciting Teenagers on the Planet. He states on his Facebook page:

“OFFICIAL: Today is a difficult day for me, but it is also a day of reflection and gratitude. Playing for all these clubs during my football career, Ashantigold fc, BEREKUM Chelsea FC, Kumasi Asante Kotoko sc, Atlético de Madrid, Etoile Sportive du Sahel, Vojvodina fc, Saham Club, Al Nahda FC, Al Ansar fc, Al faiha FC and many more.

It has been a tremendous honour representing all these clubs as a player. With much sadness but without regret, I realize that I am no longer able to adhere to the unwavering standard of excellence that professional football demands. I love the game of football so much, and I know there is truly only one acceptable way to play.

Knowing I can no longer compete at a level that I find acceptable. This decision is mine alone, and although I know this will not bring me happiness, it is the right and honourable action to take at this time in my life. I cherished every moment of my Football career, and it has been such a blessing to play the game for as long as I have played.

Reflecting on my years playing football, my current situation, reminded me of the many people I owe humble, sincere gratitude. No one has felt the burden of my physical pain and mental anguish more than my Family, my brother Rafiu, Ishmael Yartey a friend and a brother, Mubarak Wakaso , John Benson Anti Daniel and Sadat.

They have been with me throughout my pain. I will like to thank them. Thank all the coaches who contributed to my football career.Last but not least, thanks to all my playing mates in all the clubs I played against …I will still be in football but this time not as a player …GOODBYE ..ADA99″. He concluded.

Ibrahim Tanko

At the current TotalEnergies CAF U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023, Ghana’s U23 head coach, Ibrahim Tanko, voiced confidence in his team’s readiness for today’s pivotal Group A encounter against Guinea.

Guinea, who will play Ghana at the Grand Stade of Tangier, simply needs a draw to advance to the semifinal round; Ghana must earn all possible points.

Tanko made it obvious that his team is totally focused on winning the game. The coach said, “We realize that we must win to advance to the semi-finals.

According to Tanko, every player has healed well and is ready to give their all on the field. We are now focused on winning a victory after recovering from our loss against Egypt, said Tanko.

Tanko said that after having the chance to see two of Guinea’s games, they now have a greater comprehension of the team’s advantages and disadvantages.

“The people back in Ghana should have faith in us and support us because we will deliver,” added Arko-Mensah.

Paris 2024 Olympic Games Qualifiers: Coach Nora Häuptle names Black Queens squad for Guinea game

Black Queens coach, Nora Häuptle has named a provisional squad list for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games Qualifiers against Guinea.

Northern Ladies and Black Princesses shot-stopper Afi Amenyaku have earned her debut senior call-up following her heroics at the recent WAFU B U-20 Girls Cup of Nations in Kumasi.

Also in the squad are trio Ernestina Abambilla, Jennifer Cudjoe, and Alice Kusi who return after a long absence.

Camping officially opens on Monday, July 3 at the GFA Technical Centre (GSCE), Prampram at 4:00 pm. The first-round fixtures against Guinea are scheduled between 10 – 18, July 2023.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) wants to increase the application cost from GHC 5,000 to GHC 50,000 for the job of GFA president.

The decision, which was announced to the membership on June 24, 2023, was justified by the exorbitant costs of election administration.

The increased nomination price, which marks a major increase above the GHC 5,000 fee levied by the previous government in 2019 under the Normalisation Committee, would be put into effect when the GFA receives clearance from Congress.

The Elections Committee suggested increasing the Executive Council nomination fee. It was originally GHC 2,500, but now it’s GHC 15,000 instead.

Similar to that, the nomination form for the Regional Football Association (RFA) now costs GHC 10,000. Additional GFA posts with modified fees of GHC 5,000, GHC 1,000, and GHC 5,000 will include the RFA seat on the Executive Council, District Chairman, and District Executive Council.

A Congress meeting has been scheduled for July 10, 2023, during which the GFA hope to obtain the necessary approval for these proposed changes.

Razak Braimah celebrated his marriage anniversary

Razak Braimah celebrated his marriage anniversary

After the couple’s magnificent ceremony in Spain to mark their wedding anniversary, Razak Braimah, a former goalie for the Black Stars, reaffirmed his love for his wife Kalme Braimah.

The goalie, who is stationed in Spain, married his wife legally in Ghana exactly one year ago.

The couple repeated their vows on Tuesday in Spain in front of their kids and other relatives. An animated Braimah is seen strolling beside his wife and lovely daughter while wearing a gray suit.

Braimah joins the group of tall Ghanaian athletes who are wed to foreigners.

After being removed from the national squad following the 2017 AFCON, the 36-year-old is battling to be reinstated with the Black Stars.

Despite losing in a penalty shootout, he was one of the top players at the 2015 AFCON and helped Ghana advance to the finals.

Asamoah Gyan

Asamoah Gyan, a former captain of the Black Stars, claims he is at peace today after years of being humiliated.

Asamoah Gyan claims he never thought the nation would honor him until last week, when he was lauded on the floor of Parliament.

Gyan, 37, revealed last week that he was ending his two-decade long, spectacular football career.

After the announcement, MPs alternated in recognizing Ghana’s highest scorer.

Speaking during a courtesy call on Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the former Sunderland marksman said his heart is finally at peace.

“Before I’d say I had not been celebrated enough, because there were lots of disrespect and I feel like I am one of those guys who put Ghana on the map, the masses can confirm that but seeing what went on in Parliament, I am now beginning to understand, I’m beginning to feel appreciated by Ghanaians.

“I don’t really care about what people say but Parliament has confirmed and I’m sure the masses also know in their heart that I should be celebrated. I always say the numbers don’t lie”, Asamoah Gyan said.

Gyan last participated in a competitive game in the 2020–21 Ghana Premier League, appearing for Legon Cities.

Before moving to Italy and joining Udinese, where he scored 10 goals in 16 games, Gyan started his football career back in 2003 with Liberty Professionals.

Gyan played all of his football in France with Rennes, where he was a standout, scoring fourteen goals in forty-eight league games over the course of two seasons.

The 37-year-old broke the club’s transfer record when he signed for Premier League team Sunderland in 2010, and during his two seasons at the Stadium of Light, he scored 10 times in 34 Premier League games.

Before joining Legon Cities, he had played for Al Ain, Shanghai SIPG, Kayserispor, and North East United.

On the international level, Gyan played 109 times for the Black Stars and scored 51 goals. Gyan retired as Africa’s leading scorer on the international level after participating in three World Cups.

He most recently represented the Black Stars in Egypt for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), when the team lost in the Round of 16.

Annor Walker

Annor Walker, a former Great Olympics coach, is about to take over as Hearts of Oak’s next head coach, according to Ghanasoccernet.com.

Annor Walker and the team have been in talks, indicating a probable break from his two-year contract with Samartex that he signed last year.

Walker, who is a year into his Samartex deal, has been in negotiations with Hearts of Oak. Walker was drawn to the club by its illustrious status as one of the largest in the nation.

He hopes to take the team’s reins for the following season despite their dismal showing the year before, when they just avoided relegation on the last day.

Walker, who has managed various clubs in Ghana, notably Berekum Chelsea, brings a plethora of expertise to the table. Additionally, he was given the chance to lead the Black Galaxies at the current African Nations Championship. He is a strong candidate for the coaching position at Hearts of Oak due to his experience and background.

After Samuel Boadu and his replacement Slavko Matic were fired, the team finished the season with interim manager David Ocloo, who received opposition from supporters during training.

Prosper Narteh Ogum, a former Asante Kotoko coach, was first mentioned in rumors as a candidate for the Hearts of Oak position. Annor Walker, who has expressed interest in the role as well, appears to be the next target of the club’s attention.

Walker will have the chance to have a big impact on Hearts of Oak and lead them to a more effective campaign if the discussions are successful.

U-23 AFCON

Despite his team’s 3-2 triumph against Congo in their debut match at the TotalEnergies U-23 AFCON on Sunday, coach Ibrahim Tanko was disappointed.

The coach could not disguise his rage at his players, calling Ghana’s two goals “unacceptable.”

The Black Meteors led 3-0 after 90 minutes, but defensive mistakes allowed the debutants to score two fast goals in the extra minutes.

Coach Tanko appeared to be pleased with the outcome, but he was dissatisfied with the errors that led to two goals allowed in the last minutes.

“I think I’m happy we have the three points but at the same time I’m very angry about my players because that two goals we conceded after the 90th minute were unacceptable,” he said.

The strategist also revealed why he removed Ernest Nuamah and Terry Yegbe from the game.

“I mean we had to make the changes because our centre-back and Nuamah were feeling tired. We have two days to prepare for the next game so I think the three points is very important but the two goals were not acceptable.”

Ghana will return to action against Morocco in Group A on Tuesday, while Congo Brazzaville will face Guinea in the day’s second encounter. Morocco defeated Guinea 2-1 in the first round on Saturday.
