Charles Kwablan Akonnor, a former Ghanaian international and former VfL Wolfsburg captain, has counseled young defender Jonas Adjetey to concentrate on securing a consistent starting position at the team.
The 22-year-old Adjetey signed a contract with the German team through 2030 after joining from FC Basel in Switzerland this summer.
Akonnor reflected on his own time at Wolfsburg in an interview with Graphic Sports, stating that despite his difficulties, footballers received support from their clubs in general.
He emphasized how things got better as more Black players, like Pablo Thiam, established themselves in the league.
Akonnor also acknowledged that the 2006 FIFA World Cup contributed to a shift in German attitudes.
“That World Cup helped Germans accept foreign nationals more, so Adjetey will have the privilege of being welcomed well,” he noted.
Looking ahead, Akonnor, who now works as the head coach for Kenyan side Go Mahia, stressed the importance of Adjetey establishing himself on the pitch.
“All he needs to do now is to work hard, become a starter and not just a bench player. That will help and prepare him for the next level,” he said.
As he accelerates his recuperation from his hamstring injury, Mohammed Kudus has asked Tottenham Hotspur for permission to do something out of the ordinary.
After an outstanding start to his Spurs career, Kudus sustained an injury during Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Sunderland at the beginning of the year and hasn’t played a game since.
The Ghanaian’s speed and directness on the flanks have been sorely missed by Spurs, and it was first thought that Kudus wouldn’t return until April.
The 25-year-old is now among Tottenham’s double-digit absentees, and since the Lilywhites fired Thomas Frank, we now know that he will have a new management when he rejoins the training field.
According to The Sun, the former West Ham player has visited a specialist in Amsterdam in an attempt to accelerate his recovery.
It turns out that Kudus recovered from a knee injury he suffered while playing for Ajax in 2020 with the assistance of the same specialist.
Since then, the Tottenham player and the medic have stayed close, and now that the North London club has given him permission, he has chosen to receive therapy from him once more.
According to a report by The Telegraph, Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey has been charged with two further counts of rape. This news adds to the legal issue that is already looming over the 32-year-old.
In addition to the counts he is already challenging, the Crown Prosecution Service has approved the fresh charges. When Partey first appeared before Southwark Crown Court in September of last year, he entered a not guilty plea to five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.
According to reports, the alleged offenses occurred between 2021 and 2022, when he was a regular member of the first team at a Premier League club in north London. He was formally charged four days after leaving the club at the end of June, following the expiry of his contract.
Partey is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 13 March, in relation to the latest accusations. He remains on bail and is due to stand trial on November 2. Bail conditions permit him to continue his football career but require him to notify police at least 24 hours before any international travel and prohibit contact with the complainants.
Now playing in Spain’s La Liga with Villarreal after signing as a free agent, the midfielder continues to be involved with the Ghana national team. Ghana are set to face England, Panama and Croatia at the 2026 World Cup in June.
The case remains ongoing, with the charges yet to be tested in court.

Schaefer was present over the weekend when Medeama secured a penalty shootout victory against Samartex to advance to the quarterfinals of the Ghana FA Cup, continuing his assessment of players within the local scene.
In an interview with Medeamaa FM, the former Cameroon coach and AFCON winner highlighted the importance of Ghana’s domestic league to the national team’s future. He singled out Benjamin Asare for special recognition, stating that the Hearts of Oak shot-stopper has stood out among his peers.
According to Schaefer, Asare’s performances over the past two months have been exceptional, adding that the goalkeeper has shown qualities worthy of being considered among the top options for the Black Stars.
The German tactician also encouraged players competing in the Ghana Premier League to remain focused and committed, stressing that the pathway to the national team is open to those who consistently perform at a high level.
Schaefer’s remarks reinforce the significance of the local league as a key talent pipeline for the Black Stars, while further cementing Asare’s growing reputation in Ghanaian football.
Black Stars Technical Advisor Winfried Schäfer has shed light on the crucial behind-the-scenes contribution he made to Ghana’s successful qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking in an interview with Medeamaa FM, the experienced German coach explained that his impact went far beyond tactics and matchday instructions. According to Schäfer, building unity, maintaining strong communication, and prioritizing player welfare were central to the team’s achievement.
Drawing on his years of coaching experience, Schäfer revealed that he closely observed the team’s daily routines, from training sessions to shared meals, to better understand the players and the overall team dynamic.
Winfried Schäfer emphasized the importance of personal interaction, noting that he engaged both senior players such as Thomas Partey and Jordan Ayew, as well as younger members of the squad. Beyond football discussions, Schäfer made it a point to understand players on a personal level, asking about their families and club situations to foster trust and openness within the camp.
Another key focus was maintaining a healthy relationship between the national team and players’ respective clubs. Schäfer highlighted the need to ensure that players returned to their clubs fit and injury-free after international duty, acknowledging that club coaches expect their players to come back in top condition.
He also pointed to improvements in training facilities and matchday environments as important elements that boosted player performance. According to him, providing quality pitches and a professional setup created the right atmosphere for success.
Equally significant was the positive spirit within the squad. Schäfer described a united group filled with confidence, laughter, and determination. He stressed that the team approached matches with a winning mentality rather than a fear of defeat — a mindset he believes made a major difference.
The veteran tactician further underlined the importance of squad depth, praising not only the starting lineup but also the players on the bench for their full commitment to the team’s objective.
Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup stands as a major accomplishment, and Schäfer’s reflections highlight the strong structure, discipline, and unity that fueled the Black Stars’ successful campaign.
