Ghana Esports Federation launches athlete registration drive

For all athletes within its control, the Ghana Esports Federation (GESF) has announced the beginning of an official registration process.

The project, which will take place online, is to build an accurate database and identity system for Esports athletes so they may compete in both domestic and international competitions.

Athletes competing in regional esports will be the first to register between August 20 and September 20, 2024. Subsequently, regional game centers from January 12 to February 12, 2025, and regional esports teams from October 10 to November 10, 2024, will register. Through www.ghanaesportsfederation.org, the GESF’s official website, athletes can finish their registration.

The GESF emphasized the importance of this exercise, stating that it will play a crucial role in informing policy development, identifying growth opportunities, and supporting the creation of regional Esports hubs tailored to community needs. This effort is seen as a significant step in advancing the development of Esports in Ghana.

“We entreat all Esports athletes to participate in this important exercise to build an effective database,” the GESF stated, underscoring its commitment to promoting a safe and healthy environment for all Esports activities in the country.

For further information or assistance with the registration process, athletes are encouraged to contact the GESF at 020 831 8237.

Kamaldeen Sulemana

The fitness of Ghanaian winger Kamaldeen Sulemana has improved, according to Southampton manager Russell Martin.

The 22-year-old Kamaldeen Sulemana is getting close to playing again after missing the last few games of the preseason because of an injury.

“Kamaldeen is nearly fit, Ross Stewart is nearly back in contention, Adam Lallana is nearly back, so they’re in a really good place,” Martin stated.

We seem to have reached a stage where the first game has to happen. If we got extra training time, I’m not sure what we would work on.

“The players just need it to come now, and we’re incredibly happy with the work we’ve done. I believe that everyone does. It will be good to have it resolved.”

Southampton is encouraged by Sulemana’s possible availability ahead of their Premier League debut on Saturday against Newcastle United.

The quick winger might wind up being a great asset for the Saints in their quest for a successful season opener.

Sulemana’s fitness is a plus, but there will be competition for a starting place in Southampton’s starting lineup.

The team has been active in the transfer market, and manager Russell Martin will have a variety of choices at his disposal.

Medeama SC will take on Asante Kotoko in an exhibition match to officially open the stadium in what is expected to be a football festival in Tarkwa on Friday August 16, 2024. Kick off time is 18:00GMT (6pm).

The new TNA Stadium is expected to serve as the home ground of Medeama SC in the Ghana Premier League pending approval from the Club Licensing Department of the Ghana Football Association.

Lamine Yamal

Following the stabbing death of Barcelona star Lamine Yamal’s father, police have confirmed three arrests and released a health update.

After an attack in the Rocafonda neighborhood in north Barcelona, where 17-year-old Blaugrana sensation Lamine Yamal grew up, Mounir Nasraoui was taken to the hospital on Wednesday night. The 32-year-old was stabbed in the chest and ribs during a fight in a parking lot.

At the time of the event, Nasraoui was wearing a jersey with his son’s name on it. He is currently receiving medical attention while the Mossos d’Esquadra police force continues to investigate what transpired.

“I can confirm three people have been arrested following the stabbing of a man in the neighborhood of Rocafonda in Mataro,” a regional force spokesperson said. Officers are still trying to determine the degree of involvement of individuals in custody since the investigation is still ongoing. Later in the day, there might be more arrests. At this point, we are unable to provide any additional information regarding the ages and nationalities of the arrested guys. All we can disclose is that the stabbing happened in a parking lot around 9.10 p.m., the three detained were taken into custody at 11 p.m., and the arrests happened a few hours later.

“The arrests occurred in the neighborhood of Rocafonda in Mataro. The victim was taken to a hospital in Barcelona. There was a previous incident involving the men believed to have been involved in the stabbing, shortly after midday yesterday.

That incident and the circumstances surrounding the subsequent stabbing and whether the men allegedly involved bumped into each other or the suspects laid in wait for the victim is still under investigation and is an important part of the probe because it will determine the charges the arrested men could face.”

Lamine Yamal

Ghanaian defender Mohammed Salisu has praised the attributes of Barcelona and Spain forward Lamine Yamal.

On Monday night, the AS Monaco center-back faced the victor of the European Championship for the first time as the French team defeated Barcelona 3-0 to claim the Joan Gamper Trophy.

At the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, Yamal was brought on as a second-half substitution, but he was unable to prevent Salisu from matching him boot for boot, and his team lost.

“He performed admirably at the Euros after having a fantastic season. The former Real Valladolid defender told Mundo Deportivo, “I think he is a special player.”

Salisu believes the 17-year-old forward will go on and have a great career following his explosiveness.

“Yes, I think everyone was surprised because he is a young player. He is 16-17 years old and at that age, when you play this kind of football, it is a bit of a surprise for everyone. I think he has a great future and he is a great player,” he added.

Ahead of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, the Ghanaian U20 female national team, known as the Black Princesses, has left for Colombia.

In order to continue getting ready for the competition, which starts on August 31, the squad departed Accra on Tuesday night and traveled to Bogota.

Ghana is participating in its sixth World Cup and is seeking to advance past the group round for the first time.

The past champions Japan, New Zealand, and Austria are in Group E with the West Africans.

Ghana’s campaign will kick off on September 2 against Austria, a European team. Japan and New Zealand, two Asian powerhouses, will be the opponents in the following games.

The team has been preparing for the World Cup since winning the African Games gold in March. The Black Princesses started camping at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence before moving to Cape Coast.

Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif bids Black Princesses farewell ahead of FIFA U20 WWC

Honorable Mustapha Ussif, Minister of Youth and Sports, paid the Black Princesses team a visit before they flew to Colombia for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.

Ghana is making its sixth consecutive appearance on the world stage, although they have yet to surpass their group in the World Cup.

The Minister, flanked by the GFA president, urged the team to go out there and make the country proud, stressing that the country is behind them.

“On behalf of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, I am here to bid you a hopeful farewell as you embark on this journey to represent the entire country. The GFA President has spoken. I’m here to just also give you an assurance that the entire government is behind you,” he told the team.

“Everything that we are supposed to put in place, you can testify that we have done that beautifully.  We took action when we had difficulties during your camp in Cape Coast to ensure that your stay there became very successful.

He continued: “So, as you leave the shores of our country, be rest assured that we are with you. And you are not only going there to represent yourself, neither your family or your community alone, you are representing the entire country. So, this should be at the back of your minds.”

“When you step on the pitch, you should look back and know that you are representing over 30 million Ghanaians. For every decision that you are going to take on the pitch, be aware that it is people’s emotions and passions that you are representing, so you do your best to represent us well.”

“We’ll make sure we put everything in place in terms of logistics and finance. Just do your best to raise the flag of our dear country very high in Colombia. And like the President said, I’ll be the happiest minister to come to Kotoka International Airport to receive you with the trophy. Go all out and make yourselves proud. Enjoy yourselves and enjoy the game and bring glory back home.” he concluded.

VAR

Kurt Okraku, the president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has promised to improve refereeing in the domestic competitions by introducing Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology.

Although VAR is utilized extensively in more than 100 countries, developed countries and high-earning contests are the main locations for its application.

But FIFA President Gianni Infantino hinted in 2023 that a less expensive version suited for developing nations like Ghana would exist, and Okraku appears dedicated to this strategy.

Okraku emphasized that in order to allay concerns and irregularities in officiating, the organization is committed to using VAR in the Ghana Premier League.

“We are going to introduce VAR into our football. Whatever we will do to introduce VAR into football, we will, as part of our overall strategy for improving refereeing starting from our GPL, we will. It’s coming,” he stated during the Meet the Press event on Friday, as reported by 3 Sports.

At the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, during Ghana’s 2022 World Cup qualifying match versus Nigeria, VAR was used for the first time to overturn a penalty call.

In the previous season, Dreams FC’s knockout matches in the CAF Confederation Cup in Kumasi employed VAR.

Azumah Nelson concludes inaugural Zoom Zoom Clinics with inspiring session at PRESEC

The inaugural “Zoom Zoom Clinics” program, which aims to inspire Ghana’s young via mentorship and youth boxing, was officially closed last Friday by Boxing Hall of Famer Azumah Nelson. The previous session was held at the Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC) in Accra.

Azumah Nelson, his group, and his sponsors have spent the last two months visiting schools in Tamale, Kumasi, and Takoradi with youngsters between the ages of twelve and eighteen, imparting insightful knowledge from his legendary career.

Students from multiple schools, including Accra Girls Senior High School, West African Senior High School, and Labone Senior High School, met at PRESEC for the initiative’s final stop, which aims to mentor the future generation of leaders.

Azumah Nelson urged the students to maintain discipline and focus on their goals throughout his speech by sharing personal tales.

He emphasized the significance of seven values that he held responsible for his accomplishments: self-control, integrity and decency, discipline and preparation, abstaining from narcotics, perseverance and hard work, never giving up, and confidence in God.

Nelson said, “Life is just like boxing,” to the students. “You will face a lot of knocks and setbacks, but you have to be disciplined, keep trusting in God, and work towards your goals.”

The session also featured an interactive quiz on Azumah’s principles, where Nestor Kabutey, a second-year Science student, won a GH₵3,000 cash prize. Other students also received prizes for their participation.

The Assistant Headmaster of Administration at PRESEC, Prince Sackey Agortey, expressed the school’s gratitude for hosting the event, noting that they were already considering similar initiatives to inspire their students.

The event’s sponsors, GOIL, GTS Drilling, and GCB Bank, commended Azumah for her efforts to motivate young people.

Irene Boakye Dankwah, GOIL’s Corporate Affairs representative, emphasized the need of appreciating the impact of a legend such as Azumah. The HR Manager of GTS Drilling, Dr. Iddi Baah Kurey, emphasized the company’s delight about sponsoring an event that could influence the youth of Ghana in the future.

Given that the average age of a Ghanaian is 21, Samuel Aidoo, Executive Director of Wholesale & Investment Banking at GCB Bank, highlighted the need of investing in youth.

“It was a fantastic opportunity when Azumah approached us for a partnership. Many lessons can be learned from his career,” Aidoo said, adding that despite the knocks life may bring, with focus and determination, one can achieve their goals.

Paris 2024: Kenya's Wanyonyi claims gold in men’s 800m thriller

On Saturday, August 10, 2024, Emmanuel Wanyonyi won gold in the men’s 800-meter race at the Stade de France.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi finished in 1:41.19, the third fastest time ever, trailing only the World Record of 1:40.91 set in London 2012 by legendary Kenyan David Rudisha by just 0.2 seconds.

Marco Arop of Canada, who started at the back of the pack but put on a strong second lap to claim silver in a continental record of 1:41.20, and Djamel Sedjati of Algeria, who won bronze in 1:41.50, presented Wanyonyi with a formidable challenge.

“This race was tough,” Wanyonyi confessed. ‘I felt more pressure because I knew it was not easy. Sedjati is not easy (to beat), he’s a tough guy.”

“So I needed to run very fast, that’s why I led from the start to the finishing line. It was not easy for me,” he added.

Men’s 800m: Wanyonyi, the 2023 world silver medallist, reigning world champion Arop, and Sedjati, who started the race as the fastest man this year, made up one of the best fields in living memory.

But with the boisterous applause from the Paris audience, Wanyonyi sprinted to the lead early and held it all the way to the finish, even though Canada’s Arop appeared poised for an incredible recovery.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better race,” said silver medallist Arop. “Still trying to take it all in. A little bit bittersweet because I wanted that gold medal so bad. I knew these guys have been running 1:41 all year. I imagined if I keep myself in it and finish strong it’ll be incredibly fast. It’ll take me a moment for it to sink in.”

This was the fifth Olympic final in a row to be won by a Kenyan athlete, while Arop’s silver was the first Olympic medal by a Canadian in the event since 1964.
