On Saturday, August 10, the men’s basketball team from the United States defeated France 98-87 to win their fifth straight gold medal, increasing Team USA Basketball’s all-time record of Olympic gold wins to 17.

The American basketball players had to pull off the triumph, as was to be expected, in a stadium where everyone was really hoping that Team France would win their first Olympic gold in basketball on home territory.

However, Team USA prevailed thanks to 24 points from Stephen Curry, 15 from Kevin Durant, and 14 more from LeBron James, who was donning a matching pair of gold sneakers. This game also acted as a rematch between the two teams that faced off in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics basketball final and had the same outcome.

Curry, 36, won a gold medal in 2024 for the first time, and it’s probably his last. Curry was left off of the 2012 Olympic team in London and was injured in 2016 and 2020.

The 2023–24 Ghana Premier League winners, FC Samartex 1996, are getting ready to play in the CAF Champions League as Ghana’s representative.

The team was disappointed not to be able to play in front of their home crowd despite their excitement.

Management member Alex Ayamba underlined how important their fans were to their league success.

“Our supporters we would have loved to play in front of our supporters if you look at the league we won they played a pivotal role. We are very comfortable playing in front of our supporters so we would have loved to play it here but we couldn’t,” he told Peace FM

GFA President Kurt Okraku pledges legacy of honesty amidst transparency concerns

Despite criticism of his leadership style, Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has stated that he wants to be regarded as an honest leader.

Speaking to the media on Friday, August 9, at the GFA’s Meet the Press event in Sunyani, Okraku underlined his dedication to being truthful and keeping his word.

The occasion, which took place at the Eusbett Hotel, gave Okraku a chance to address those who have questioned his openness in leading the organization.

“I want to be remembered for being a very honest leader who stood by his words and delivered the same at every given opportunity,” he said.

Reiterating his stance, Okraku said, “This is how I want to be remembered.” His remarks come amidst ongoing debates about the governance of the GFA and calls for greater openness in its operations.

Kwesi Appiah

Kwesi Appiah, the coach of Sudan’s national team, was present at the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) Executive Council meeting on Thursday at the Technical Center in Prampram.

Appiah participated in talks on governance, audit, compliance, and policies to advance Ghanaian football development while serving as a member of the GFA Executive Council.

Appiah’s two roles have caused a stir. He still maintains a prominent role within the GFA and is the head coach of the Sudan national team.

Due to this, there have been increasing calls for him to resign from his position as GFA, especially since the Black Stars were drawn into the same group as Sudan for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Given that Appiah takes choices that affect the Black Stars, critics contend that his membership in both football associations may provide conflicts of interest.

Appiah has stated that he intends to hold onto both roles and carry on serving both countries in spite of the criticism.

Prince Kwabena Adu

On Thursday night, FC Kryvbas lost 2-1 to FC Viktoria Plzeň in their Europa League qualifying match. Ghanaian international Prince Kwabena Adu scored for FC Kryvbas.

With help from Cameroonian defender Ivan Dibango, Prince Kwabena Adu scored a beautiful goal just 20 minutes into the first leg of their qualification encounter, starting for Kryvbas. Kryvbas took the lead thanks to his strike, but it did not last long.

Jiri Panos and Daniel Vasulin’s goals in the second half gave Viktoria Plzeň a huge boost, allowing them to come back from behind and win 2-1.

Adu made a great showing, but his goal was insufficient to give Kryvbas a win.

Before being replaced, Prince Kwabena Adu participated in the game for 81 minutes.

The second leg of the qualification tie promises to be a challenging task for Kryvbas as they aim to overturn the deficit and progress further in the competition.

On October 12, 2024, in the United States, Asante Kotoko and DC United, a Major League Soccer team, will play in the Capital City Africa Cup.

After overcoming bitter rivals Hearts of Oak to win the inaugural Democracy Cup, the dominant team in the Ghana Premier League gained the right to play the American Soccer Club.

The Porcupine Warriors’ participation in the game, which will be a part of the celebrations commemorating Ghana Week 2024 in Washington, DC, has been accepted by the Ghana Football Association and the Ghana Tourism Authority.

With Medeama being the first, this will be the second year in a row that a Ghanaian club has played in the friendly Cup match in the United States.

Asante Kotoko are the most successful club in Ghana, with a rich history of winning trophies, including being two-time champions of Africa.

Former Black Stars player exposes harsh treatment

Stephen Frimpong Manso, a former Ghana international, has provided a somber account of the circumstances Black Stars players endured in the 1990s.

The former Bibiani Gold Stars coach opened up about the unpleasant realities of subpar facilities, subpar living arrangements, and terrible management during training camps in a recent interview with Joy Sports.

Manso, who played for Ghana from 1987 to 1994, drew attention to the striking difference in how the Black Stars and their opponents were treated.

He particularly singled out former coach Burkhard Ziese for his efforts in improving player welfare.

“Sometimes we will be playing like we are playing, let’s say, Ivory Coast. They will be staying at a five-star hotel…but the home team, rather, are not treated well. The conditions in Winneba at that time, everybody knew it wasn’t the best,” Manso said.

The former player mentioned an instance in which money intended for players was misappropriated when accusing officials of mismanaging club finances.

Manso claimed that Ziese played a key role in resolving these problems and guaranteeing improved circumstances for the players.

Kamaldeen Sulemana

Owing to an injury, Ghanaian winger Kamaldeen Sulemana is anticipated to miss the start of the 2024–2025 English Premier League season.

The 22-year-old Kamaldeen Sulemana is expected to miss Southampton’s opening game on Saturday, August 17 at St. James’ Park against Newcastle United due to an injury he suffered during the team’s 2-0 loss to Oxford United.

Sulemana’s condition was verified by Southampton manager Martin Russell, who declared, “Kamaldeen will be out for three weeks.”

This report was released shortly before Southampton’s Wednesday, August 9 preseason match against Lazio, following the team’s defeat at Oxford United.

As part of their preseason preparations, the Saints will also play Spanish La Liga team Getafe on Saturday, August 10. This is in addition to their matchup with Lazio.

After being demoted after the 2022–2023 season, Southampton is getting ready to rejoin the Premier League.

Sulemana’s injury marks the latest setback for the player, who has previously struggled with multiple injuries while playing for French Ligue 1 side Stade Rennes and Southampton.

Anderlecht

Ghanaian winger Jerusun Rak Sakyi, who was born in England, is much sought after by Belgian team Anderlecht.

Anderlecht is interested in the 21-year-old right winger from Crystal Palace, who is also a skilled left winger and attacking midfielder, according to reports in the English media.

Two seasons ago, Rak Sakyi, who trained at Chelsea and Crystal Palace, also went on loan to Charlton. On April 10, 2021, he made his debut for Crystal Palace as an unutilized substitute against Chelsea. Two days later, he inked his first professional contract with the organization. He made his Premier League debut on August 14, 2021, as a substitute in a 3-0 loss to Chelsea.

Despite missing several months of the previous season because of a hamstring injury, he participated in 11 games and contributed an assist. With five caps for England U-20, Lyon, Leeds, Burnley, Sheffield United, and Southampton are among the teams showing interest in Rak Sakyi.

A buyout option is not currently included in the proposed deal with Anderlecht. Rak Sakyi is valued at almost two million euros, and his contract with Crystal Palace expires in June 2027.
