The parliament of Ghana has approved a sum of GH¢65,899,456.00 to support sports development across the country.

The approval of GH¢65,899,456.00 to support sports development was granted on Thursday, March 27, 2025, following a motion presented by the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza.

Several members of Parliament, including Daniel Nana Addo-Kenneth, MP for Okere Constituency, seconded the motion, emphasizing the need for proper maintenance of sports facilities.

“Maintenance has been an issue, and if we want to continue developing our sports and engaging the youth, the maintenance aspect should be very important to the ministry. This will ensure that these facilities last and provide opportunities for young people to develop their talent,” he stated

Agbodza outlined the ministry’s objectives for the money allotted, pointing out that it will be used to improve sports across the country.

“The amount is intended to help the ministry cover the activities of sports in the country, including the development of a new sports policy, the rehabilitation of some stadia, and the establishment of the national sports fund,” he explained.

The approval marks a significant step in boosting the country’s sports sector, ensuring better infrastructure and opportunities for young athletes.

Abena Osei Asare, the MP for Atiwa East, is a supporter for the Black Stars to include more local players.

Honorable member of parliament for Atiwa East, Abena Osei Asare, is now advocating for the inclusion of more local players in the Black Stars team.

The MP and former deputy finance minister believes that when more local players are included in the team, it will make the Black Stars stronger than it is now. She made the statement by referring to the impact Benjamin Asare from Accra Heart of Oak has made in just two games.

Following their significant victories over Chad and Madagascar during the March international break, the Black Stars have brought great joy to Ghanaians.

With back-to-back clean sheets, goalie Benjamin Asare impressed many. He was in the post for both games.

Only three local players made the Black Stars roster for the two games, including the Hearts of Oak goalkeeper.

Many Ghanaians, in addition to Abena Osei Asare, are demanding that more local players be given chances in the upcoming national team assignment.

The sensational Bournemouth attacker, Antoine Semenyo, promised to never turn his back on the Ghana Black Stars, making it clear that he’s ready and will always avail himself for the team.

The Ghana Black Stars forward has cemented his position as a key player for the national team. Since his debut in June 2022, Antonie has made 21 appearances and scored three goals.

After the Black Stars’ 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification failure, the former Bristol City player helped the team win back-to-back games in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, reviving national pride.

“I feel that anything that will stop me from the national team is obviously injury. I will always avail myself. I always want to play for the nation. It’s being a dream to play for the national team and it an honour to represent the country as well” he told JoySports.

In addition to helping the Black Stars defeat Madagascar handily in the fifth and sixth rounds of the qualifications, Semenyo scored as the team thrashed Chad 5-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The much sought-after forward has returned to his English club, Bournemouth, as the team prepares for the match this weekend.

When the World Cup qualifications resume in September 2025, the Black Stars will reassemble.

Club World Cup

FIFA, the world football governing body, has promised each of the four African teams participating in the first FIFA Club World Cup 2025 an incredible USD 9.55 million in participation fees.

Between June 14 and July 13, 2025, the United States will host the first FIFA Club World Cup, which will include 32 clubs, including four of Africa’s best:

Al Ahly (Egypt)

Esperance de Tunis (Tunisia)

Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa)

Wydad Athletic Club (Morocco)

All competing teams will split the massive USD 1 billion prize money, and FIFA will make sure that clubs on all continents have a fair and successful arrangement.

Clubs from Europe and South America will earn more money based on their market worth and past success, while clubs from Asia and CONCACAF would receive the same amount as clubs from Africa.

Stephen Appiah is confident Ghana is close to 2026 World Cup qualification

Following their strong performance in the qualifications, Stephen Appiah, a Black Stars management committee member, thinks Ghana is poised to earn a ticket in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana is now five points clear at the top of Group I after winning back-to-back games, first against Chad in Accra and then a convincing 3-0 victory against Madagascar. Appiah is certain the club is getting closer to qualifying with four games remaining.

Black Stars coach Otto Addo cautioned Ghanaians that the job of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup is not done.

The Ghana Black Stars head coach, Otto Addo, has warned the team and Ghanaians about the thought that they have already qualified for the 2026 World Cup after the 3-0 win over Madagascar.

Black Star made a great effort to secure 6 points in their last two games, giving them the lead in Group I. Against Madagascar they managed to keep another clean sheet; goals were scored by Thomas Partey and Mohammed Kudus, with Jordan Ayew assisting all the goals on the night.

However, Addo insists the team must remain focused.

“We are in a good position [to qualify for the 2026 World Cup], but this is also dangerous,” Addo said at the post-match press conference.

“Now, I am thinking about how to keep our heads focused [because] the job is not done. Maybe if Comoros wins, it’s just a three-point gap ahead of Comoros, and it’s still a long way to go. We have to stay focused. If anyone thinks we are through, then he’s making a big mistake.”

With four games to end the qualifiers, Addo stressed the need for his players to maintain their concentration and avoid complacency.

“I have seen a lot of football, a lot of things happening, and we have to stay focused. I am happy, but like I said, the job is really not done,” he reiterated.

2026 World Cup Qualifiers: The Madagascar Game is like a small final - Otto Addo

Otto Addo, the Black Stars’ head coach, has compared their forthcoming World Cup Qualifiers match against Madagascar to a minor championship.

Kickoff for the Matchday six matches of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers vs Ghana is set for 19:00 GMT tonight at the Barea at the Al Hoceima Grand Stadium.

“We need everyone to be on their toes. We don’t need 98%, we don’t need 99%, we need 100%,” Addo told the Ghana FA media

“This [game against Madagascar] is like a small final and if we win this game, then we really going towards to qualify but it’s going to be very tough.

“We observed the Madagascar team and they have done really well especially in their last game so they are in good form and it’s going to be a tough game,” he added.

Ghana presently leads Group I with 12 points following their decisive victory over Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium. They will look to maintain their momentum going into their matchup with the Malagasy.

2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Asamoah Gyan's Words To  Black Stars

Asamoah Gyan, a former captain of Ghana, has urged the Black Stars to play against Madagascar with zeal and heart.

Kickoff for tonight’s Matchday six of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers is set for 19:00 GMT, and the four-time African champions will face the Barea.

Gyan, Africa’s leading scorer at the FIFA World Cup with six goals, has pushed his teammates to go out for the win against the Malagasy team after the team’s thrilling 5-0 victory over Chad last Friday at the Accra Sports Stadium.

He also charged the team to ensure they don’t concede against their opponent.

“Let’s go one hundred per cent guys, I want Ghanaians to see you guys heckling and fighting and the result will come by itself, that’s all I want from you guys. We have great players, the talent and everything is there, that commitment, a bit, small push, we will get there,” Gyan said.

“Me and my colleagues, the technical team have confidence in you guys if not we won’t be here but the reason why we are here is just to push you just a bit to make sure you get there, that’s what we want.

“Let’s go for the kill, let’s go for the win, make sure we don’t concede if we don’t concede it’s one point, if we win it’s three points and we are there and then everybody can ease the pressure.” Asamoah Gyan said during an interaction with the players in camp,” he added.

After five matches played, Ghana are top of Group I with 12 points, two points ahead of Madagascar.

Madagascar's game will more difficult than that of Chad – Otto Addo

Otto Addo, the coach of Ghana, has cautioned that the Black Stars’ upcoming match against Madagascar will be more difficult than their 5-0 triumph against Chad.

On Monday, March 24, in Morocco, the Black Stars will play Madagascar in their sixth-round 2026 World Cup qualifying match. Addo thinks the team have to turn their attention to the game right away because it will be more difficult.

“First of all, I am happy that we won, also that we scored a lot of goals,” Addo said after the Chad match.

“But to be honest, we have to concentrate on Monday. It will be a different game. It will be much, much difficult, and we are already thinking ahead of that game.”

Antoine Semenyo gave the Black Stars the lead in the second minute, and they dominated the match against Chad.

Ghana put on a great offensive display, with goals from Inaki Williams, Jordan Ayew, Mohammed Salisu, and Ernest Nuamah.

With 12 points from the win, Ghana now leads Group I by two points over Madagascar.

Addo and his team will want to keep up their momentum and solidify their place in the competition for a spot at the 2026 World Cup with a pivotal matchup against Madagascar coming up.

World Cup 2026 Qualifiers: Ghana Black Stars wins 5-0 Over Chad

Ghana Black Stars delivered a stunning performance as they trashed Chad by 5-0 on Friday night, 21st March 2025. The team’s determination to qualify for the 2026 World Cup has started on a good note this year.

The senior national team of Ghana started the game well by getting the early goal through Antoine Semenyo, who got the ball into the post with a great rebound.

Inaki Williams, who has been struggling in his recent appearances for Black Stars, also got a goal, doubling the scores in the 32nd minute. The scoring got better when Jordan Ayew, the captain of Ghana, also made it 3-0 from a spot kick before halftime.

The team continued to dominate Chad as they increased their attacking threats, which led to the 4th goal scored by Mohammed Salisu.

Ernest Nuamah on the night was seen as more impactful and also got a goal in the 69th minute after a fine pass from Ayew.

Benjamin Asare kept a historic clean sheet on his international debut, but he was not required to do much as Chad barely tested him.
